Introducing the SoundLocal Instrument Drop-Off Program

Today we're launching the SoundLocal Instrument Drop-Off Program — a network of participating music stores across the DC and Maryland area where anyone can donate a musical instrument in person.

The idea came from a simple problem. There are a lot of instruments sitting unused in closets and basements, and there are schools whose music programs need instruments. Getting from one to the other is harder than it should be. Shipping is expensive, many donated instruments need repair before a student can play them, and most people don't know where to start.

Participating music stores solve all three. They're already somewhere you can drive to. Their staff know instruments — what an item is, what condition it's in, what it needs. And when something needs a pad replacement, a setup, or a cleaning, they can do that work properly.

Here's how it works. Bring an instrument to a participating store and tell a staff member you're donating to SoundLocal. A store representative records what you've brought and takes photos. You'll receive an official donation receipt from SoundLocal by email.

From there, each instrument is evaluated. Where a school has a need, the instrument is serviced and placed with that school's music program. Where it isn't needed, it's sold, and the proceeds fund SoundLocal's work supporting students, educators, and community music programs. That's deliberate — we'd rather place one trumpet where a school actually needs a trumpet than warehouse five hundred flutes nobody asked for.

For participating locations, what we accept, and everything else you need to know before you drop off, see the full program details below.
